Super Yakuza Bros.! Why do you think they're always wearing overalls, and how the hell could two ordinary plumbers conquer a Kingdom Hehe (guess they should actually be considered members of the italiena maffia if any, oh well) (Mario Sunshine t-shirtin' does not count...it's a...um..prequel!?!?1)
This was a cool idea I got the other day (like, month ago)...when I was playing SEGAs great game "Yakuza" on the PS2. "Why don't I do a fanart of Mario & Luigi with big Mario-themed tattoos, Yakuza style!?" So I did. Turned out kinda great. Had loads of fun drawing as much of the the Mario Universe in such a limited space, included alot of different characters and stuff tho, can you see 'em all? I especially like Bowser & Yoshi with that "chinese dragon" moustahce going on Including Peach on Marios back was fun too, I've actually got a book about Yakuza-tattoos (intresting stuff those) where a dude had a full portrait of a (his wife I think) woman on his back. So I instantly decided that Peach would fit great on Marios back
Yakuza tattoos are a phenomenal...phenomenon (!?) I say, real cool shit if you ask me. For those who don't know what the hell I'm talking about here the quick low-down: 1. Yakuzas have tattoos, big ones, and even having a tattoo is considered almost criminal, you're a Yakuza if you have one, simple as that. 2. Some of them are "whole-body" ones, covering almost every inch (for instance this and this one) Who knows, maybe Mario and Luigi got the front covered aswell
I like the Mario games, I like Yakuza (and Shenmue, best game ever, end of sidenote) so I guess this just had to happen...
*Actually sat down and slurped a big bowl of ramen at a place in Sapporo and this dude, with his whole arm tattooed from the wrist and up with dragon sat down, missing a finger and all... seemed real nice tho...haha (M&L has got theirs chopped off aswell) Was pretty cool xD These guys are all over japan, you see 'em in every street corner, just as natural as any pedestrian. **A tattooist (!? xD) always leaves his signature, the white redish kanji thing you see just by the neck. The right hand Kanji reads "Miyamoto", which of course refers to Shigeru Miyamoto himself, and the left one says "Shinkawa" which is a translation of my name, roughly translated to "new river, new stream", in swedish tho ***Yeah, that's a mashup of the old logo for "New Super Mario Bros.(NDS) "and the logo for "Yakuza" (PS2). (play the game!) ***Kazuma Kiryu ftw btw, buy that god damn game all you yanks!
**** A picture of my original sketch for the both tattoo designs can be found here Yeah, I drew that shit twice *****Yup, that's theWave Hokusai ****** Anyone brave enough to go down to the parlor and have you back done like this? Haha, be sure to tell me if so.
Lineart done (twice xD) traditionally, colored in the digital medium, as mentioned before, ain't no ace in it yet, but it'll do.
You could even see symbolism in this pic with their tattoos the way that Kazuma and Nishki's tattoos did. Nishki's is the carp that wishes to swim up the stream to become a dragon while Kazuma's IS a dragon, just as here Luigi's main feature on his back is Bowser, the evil that must be defeated in order to get the princess while Mario's HAS the princess.
I tend to struggle when it comes to drawing those kinds of tattoos (or Irezumi as they're known as in Japan), seeing as they have a great number of details, hence why most often take years to complete.
Yeah, sure did take alot o time. But I'm really into these designs, got a couple of books about japanese tattoos and stuff, so I had alot of good reference material
omg this is excellent and probably one of the most original things I've ever seen any deviant do with the Mario Bros! Those tattoos look fabulous, I especially like the oriental dragon Bowser. Someone should have something like this done in real life, that would be so much win!
Might remake these soon in some way...
I like this one, might do a remake someday
I put alot of effort into the design, to make it true to the Mario series, and true to the Japanese way of tattoos.
